The 5m-5 Informer
Mid-Winter Convention EXTRA! A Special Issue of the 5M-5 Informer
EXTRA! EXTRA! Read All About It! This EXTRA! edition of the Informer is to alert all Lions, Lioness and Leos of the events of the upcoming 2004 Mid-Winter Convention, January 16, 17 and 18. We know you’ll have questions about what changes to expect at the new location. This edition explains a little about each convention event and will help you plan for an exciting Mid-Winter experience. The November Informer will be published soon. An Invitation from Governor Jackie Morlock to YOU! Dear Lions, Lioness and Leos, The MID-WINTER CONVENTION is just around the corner. This weekend is for YOU, all LIONS, LIONESS, AND LEOS. We heartily invite the spouses to attend and see what Lionism is really about while having fun. This is a time for us to be INNOVATIVE in accepting our new surroundings for this year. It’s a time for renewing friendships throughout our District. It is a time to see and hear what we are all about. It is a time for ALL to be refreshed on Lionism. It is a time to learn some more. We invite you to attend the full weekend if possible. Attending a whole convention is like sitting down to dinner and eating it all. You are more satisfied. However, you are encouraged to come to what you can, this is better than not coming at all. Friday night after the Necrology, is always fun and will be known as Denim Night, so wear your denim shirt, skirt, jeans, jumper. Saturday night is dressier as the International Director is our special guest. Sunday brunch is “Hat Day”. Lion Jack Hines threw in his “hat” for Vice District Governor, plus the “hat is back” for the spouse of the governor. So this is one time when all hats will be accepted to wear indoors, you can actually wear your baseball cap, seed corn cap or other cap to the brunch. This will give us additional fun at the brunch. Please accept this invitation to attend the convention. See you all on January 16-17-18. Yours in Lionism, Lion Jackie Morlock, District Governor
Mid-Winter Innovation! When the 2004 Mid-Winter Convention Committee discovered the Ramada Northwest renovation was not going to be completed by the time of the convention – they immediately went into INNOVATION MODE ! They needed to find another hotel that would match the room rates promised to us by the Ramada Northwest and after some searching a deal was struck with the Hilton Hotel North. The Hilton is a beautiful hotel and their people are anxious to provide a great location for the 5M-5 2004 Mid-Winter Convention January 16, 17 and 18. The Hilton is located at 2200 Freeway Boulevard, Brooklyn Center, just north of I-694 between Highway #100 and Highway #169 on Shingle Creek Parkway. From I-694 exit to the right at Exit 34 (Shingle Creek Pkwy), north to the 2nd stop light (Freeway Boulevard), left to the Hilton Hotel. There is plenty of parking for everyone!

Accentuating the Positive!
The most noticeable change will be the location of the club Hospitality Rooms on the 2nd and 3rd floors of the hotel. This change allows families with young children to enjoy the pool and recreation area without the distraction of nearby hospitality rooms. The heated pool, sauna and whirlpool located in the first floor Atrium recreation area requires a room key for access as does the 24-hour fitness center on the Mezzanine Level. The Mezzanine Level will also be the location of seminars on Saturday The Hilton offers Saturday morning early risers a breakfast buffet in the restaurant Lombard’s beginning at 6:00 a.m. The restaurant closes from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. and opens again from 5:00 TO 10:00 p.m.
REGISTRATION: Registration/Accreditation will begin at 4:00 p.m. Friday afternoon in the Calhoun Room near the Atrium/Pool and again at 6:30 a.m. Saturday morning until 11:30. The room will reopen from 2:00 to 6:30 p.m.
HOSPITALITY ROOMS: Club Hospitality Rooms will be located on the 2nd and 3rd floors – these rooms are available on a first come / first serve basis. There are centrally located elevators and only 16 rooms on each floor so each hospitality room is in close proximity to another. Hospitality Room numbers will be posted in the elevators. The Convention Committee has most of the magnetic club signs for the hospitality rooms. If your club is one that took their sign home from a previous Mid-Winter – please bring it along to use in identifying your room. There are a few general things to keep in mind to make for a trouble-free relationship between the hotel and your club: · beds cannot be removed from the room · each Hospitality Room will be provided one table for food service · it is recommended you bring bags of ice to cool large amounts of beverages and food in tubs. (Note: blocks are better than cubes) · use 15 amp. power strip in which to plug in appliances · please do not tape anything - notices, campaign literature, etc. on any walls of the rooms or hallways · Hospitality Rooms should be closed during the Memorial Service Friday night, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. We urge everyone to take time to visit each hospitality room following the Memorial Service for snacks, libation and who knows what surprises you’ll find – along with meeting and greeting old and new friends!
MEMORIAL SERVICE: The Friday night Memorial Service honors with music and message our Lion and Lioness friends who have passed away since the last Mid-Winter meeting. The 2004 Homily will be given by the Rev. John Hinderlie, First Lutheran Church of St. Louis Park. It is the responsibility of every club member to make sure their friends and co-members are remembered at this beautiful service.
EXHIBITS: If this is your first Mid-Winter you’ll want to stop by the Pre-Convention area on the first floor to see the displays by venues supported by Lions.
9:30 SEMINARS: 1) Dram Shop 2) Lions: Who we are: covering Lions History, Sight, Hearing, and Diabetes involvement.
SATURDAY PRESIDENT’S LUNCHEON: The Presidents of Lions, Lioness and Leo Clubs are honored at this luncheon. Spouses are encouraged to attend. The speaker is yet to be determined at the time of this printing but we can assure you it will be an interesting and inspirational message of the value of Lionism and service to others.
BUSINESS MEETING: This 2:30 meeting consists of brief reports by district chairpersons, followed by election of Vice District Governor and District Governor for the year 2004-2005. Everyone – Lions, Lioness, Leos, spouses - are welcome to attend.
WOMEN IN LIONISM: New this year is a 2:30 seminar discussing the options women have to involve themselves in Lions as Lion members.
2:30 LEO FORUM: An opportunity for an exchange of ideas between members of the Leo Clubs of 5M-5. It will also provide an opportunity for Lions anticipating forming a Leo club to learn how these young men and women are fulfilling the Lion motto of We Serve.
GOVERNOR’S BANQUET: :Hear an inspirational message from International Director Lowell Bond and enjoy a fine meal with fellow Lions. A highlight of the evening will be the presentation of the John Lutter Memorial Award as well as other awards to deserving 5M-5 Lions.
SUNDAY MORNING RECOGNITION BRUNCH: The Sunday morning brunch is a casual affair with plenty of coffee, mischievous Tail Twisters, the impressive Parade of Checks and general wrap-up of convention activities. Another highlight of this event is the awarding of District Awards to outstanding clubs by Immediate Past Governor Larry Lundquist.
We hope we see YOU at the 2004 Mid Winter Convention!
