July-August 2005 Volume 3, Issue 1
I want to thank DG Ole and Lion Karen for all the work they did for
us last year in 5M-5. With their leadership we are ready to move into
the second year of “The Plan”.
Carol and I got back from Hong Kong July 2, after attending the Lions
International convention. Hong Kong is a beautiful city, and the food was very
good. We did a couple of days of sightseeing before we went to class.
We attended the last five days of our leadership training. Our trainer
was Nesim Levi from Turkey and he did a great job keeping us all together. We
had 38 DGE’s representing New Zealand, New York, New Jersey, Pakistan, and 5M in
our group. We will all go back to our districts and spread President Mehta’s
message.
We then spent four days at the International Convention. The last day of the
convention Lion Ashok Mehta was sworn in as President of Lions
Club International.
Following President Mehta’s inspirational message, the seven hundred and fifty
District Governor-elects were sworn in as District Governors 2005-2006.
President Mehta’s theme as International President Lions Clubs
International 2005-2006 is -
PASSION TO EXEL
Passion to Excel
includes five points
Promote
Wear your lapel pin to show you are a Lion.
Perform
Work at your local fund raisers.
Serve
Do a community service project.
Lead
Volunteer to chair a project.
Grow
Ask at least one person to be a member this year.
President Mehta is going to be a dynamic and passionate leader of Lions
Clubs International.
My theme for this next year reflects the passion Carol and I share in
service to others and dedication to Lionism. The theme of my Lions year is
“Passion for Service.” I hope you will join me in developing this same
passion in each of our Lion members in our great District 5M-5..
Carol and I look forward to working with you, serving you and getting to know
you all a little better.
With Passion for Service,
Dist. Governor Jack Hines

Did you know the District provides a
wonderful asset to any Lion or Lioness club needing a speaker or program for
their next meeting? Lion Terry Selle represents the Speakers Bureau on
the District Cabinet and can help arrange a speaker for your club. Give
Terry a call at 952-334-1962.

Carol Hines believed she and Jack
had reached full mental maturity at ages 18 and 19. They had both graduated
from Elk River High School. They proceeded to marry on September 1, 1962 and
drove off on a short honeymoon to Rochester, MN. Their 1956 maroon Ford took
them all the way with only one flat tire. They now have been together nearly 43
years.
Jack and Carol’s five children were born
between 1963 and 1970 which would indicate Jack had little time for his hobbies:
horses, broom-maker at Lake Itasca, moon shining, wine making and chili
cooking! It’s amazing what you can do when you are young. Their family has
proven to be the most rewarding part of their life together. All five children
graduated from Elk River High School. They are now all married and productive.
They combined to give Jack and Carol sixteen grandchildren, with another
grandchild due in December. Only nine miles separates any of their children’s
homes and the family support is instantaneous.
The Hines family has always been very
community minded. Jack and Carol have broadened their horizons with travel to
several countries and have hosted people from many parts of the world. However,
they believe that nothing will give them greater vision than their dedication to
Lionism.
In the last issue of the Informer we
printed a charming picture of first wife Carol at the Multiple Convention in
Brandon. It would seem only fair now that we offer a photo revealing the true
nature of our new governor.
For some unexplainable reason, Gov. Jack
and his fellow Governors-in-training decided to remove half their clothes and
participate in a competitive version of the traditional New Zealand Maori dance
of Ha-ka. The haka is a way to ignite the breath,
energize the body and inspire the spirit. As you can see, the haka is an
energized form of movement that can improve neuromuscular efficiency. The strong
use of the diaphragm, the strong isometric contractions and the vocalization of
sound can create tremendous energy buildup.
Jack’s group of governors actually won
this competition, giving a pretty good idea of the condition of the rest of the
District Governors from around the world!

Here’s Gov. Jack (behind the “warrior” in
the gray pants) showing off his ignited breath, energized body and inspired
spirit for Lionism! HooYa!

Minneapolis Elks Lodge #44 in
Brooklyn Park will be the location for the kick-off of Gov. Jack’s Lions
year. The date is Monday, August 15th. Gov. Jack has
assembled a great group of Lions to serve in various cabinet posts. They will
be instituting the second phase of “The Plan” the 5M-5 Lions’ effort for
“Growing, Healthy Clubs. Meeting details will be forthcoming soon.

Come one! Come all – club presidents
and secretaries - to the first All-Zone Meeting to be held Monday,
August 22nd. The Minnetonka Community Center (Minnetonka Boulevard
and Williston Road) is the place to be at 6:00 pm.
Club Presidents and Secretaries are required to attend; all interested Lions
also welcome. Please be sure to let your Zone Chair know how many will be
attending from your club so that we can plan for the meal. The Hopkins Noontime
Lions will be serving a spaghetti dinner for $10 a person. Check-in and social
from 6:00 to 6:20, dinner served at 6:20 sharp. Presidents and Secretaries –
get your Lions year off to a great start!

Brooklyn Center Lioness, Inky
Maeschler, was the recent recipient of
the most prestigious award in Lionism, the
Melvin Jones Award.
For many years Inky has traveled with VOSH to
third world countries delivering and fitting patients with used eyeglasses that
have been collected and sorted by Lions and Lioness on an on-going basis.
Congratulations, Inky!
The Maple Grove Lions honored three of
their members with Melvin Jones Awards at the club’s June Anniversary
Dinner. All three are strong leaders in the club as well as highly involved in
the community. It was reported the awards brought tears and lots of hugs!
Maple Grove Lion Dan Sweeney
has been in the club since 1994, served as secretary and president and now
serves a s
their gambling advisor.
Maple Grove Lion Jan Cariveau,
a familiar face in 5M-5 as Zone Chairman for several years, will serve Governor
Jack Hines as his Cabinet Secretary.
Maple Grove Lion Steve Larson
has been president of the club and serves all of us in 5M-5 as the very able
Webmaster and administrator of the Lions 5M5.org web site.
Hopkins Evening Lions
recently honored long-time Lion member
Paul Hartmann for his many years of service to the club with a Melvin
Jones Award.
Also honored was Lion Wayne Harkness for
his years of service to his club and District 5M-5. Lion Wayne was presented
with the Helen Keller Award.

The Chanhassen Lions, along with several other clubs in District 5M2 served by

assist them with the maintenance of their ambulance fleet.
Ridgeview Hospital hosted an appreciation

After 52 years of "great service" for the
residents of Golden Valley, it was the belief of the fourteen members of the
Golden Valley Lions Club that the time had arrived and the "legacy of the Golden
Valley Lions Club” should be dissolved.
We
have all enjoyed and benefited from the association of Lionism. Because of
changing demographics/lifestyles we have been unable to increase membership to
our club. Three of our members are transferring to other 5M clubs.

Six people attended the April MD5M Regional
Leadership Institute held in Mahnomen, MN April of 2005. Five days of training
crammed into three! What a whirlwind of information. So fast and FUN!
Fabulous teachers, a wealth of information for us to share with our district and
clubs, and more fun than one can have in such a short time. Friends were made
from all over Minnesota and Canada. Watch for details of the next Leadership
Institute and sign up to attend. You will never regret the time. Your emotions
are on a high like none other. No one really knows Lionism until you have
attended a Leadership Session.
