October 2004 Volume 2, Issue 2
Greetings, fellow Lions! Greetings from the USA / Canada Forum in Reno, Nevada! I am writing this newsletter from our hotel room at the Peppermill in Reno. Lion Karen is at the Thursday evening banquet representing District 5M5 with our fellow Multiple 5M Governors and their spouses while I am in the room nursing a nasty cold that has laid me flat. We left Mpls on Wednesday, August 8 with a plane- load of Lions. I had been told that the plane was more than 80% Lions. I was able to make the opening session, The Art of Recognition, presented by Past Intl Pres. Don Banker and our own PID Ross. What a job they did! They spoke of how just a ‘Thank you’ has a cascading effect on the way others see you. ‘Thank’ you is not just a warm fuzzy that you give to others, but when said with sincere appreciation it can be life changing. All of the presenters and moderators for this forum were top–shelf with a real passion for the Lions organi-zation. The District Governors had a meeting with International President Clement Kusiak making this an exciting time in the life of a District Governor. We had been told by someone from the Host Committee that there were approximately 3,000 Lions, Lioness, Leos and guests at this U.S.A. /Canada Forum with about 25% being first timers (having never attended a Forum before). I would like to say that if you have never attended a forum before, this is the place you want to be….it is a wonderful learning experience to find out what Lions is truly about; meeting new Lions with new and fresh ideas to bring back to our own clubs. Not only did Reno give us wonderful facilities for our forum but also on Friday and Saturday mornings, out of our hotel window, we saw 100 hot air balloons. Reno was the site of a Hare and Hound balloon race. What a majestic site it was with the beautiful sunrise coming over the mountains and the balloons slowly rising making a rainbow of color!
I would like to remind the Presidents, Secretaries, and Membership Chairs about the Zone Meeting September 30 at Camp Eden Wood. This is an open event…if you want to attend, please contact your club president to make a reservation for you. Your Region and Zone Chairs will be contacting the club presidents. I feel that we need a little excitement at the convention so…if there is 100% representation at the first two zone meetings, the Region and Zone Chairs will be shaving my head at the Mid-winter Convention in front of all of the Lions present! If all clubs are represented for all of the Zone Meetings, there will be another surprise. Let’s get to the Zone meetings ! In closing, I would like to thank the Lions of 5M5 for your vote of confidence at the Mid-winter election in 2003, and the support and encouragement you have given Lion Karen and myself at the club visits and meetings. A special thank you to the Cabinet and club presidents for the extra-mile I am asking them to take this year. With your help and commitment, we will make this a Lions year of fun, excitement and growth! Yours in Lionism, District Governor Ole
Camp Edenwood is the place to be on Thursday, September 30th for the first District 5M-5 All Zones Meeting. Social begins at 6:00 pm, dinner ($15.00) at 6:45 and meeting at 7:00. All club presidents, secretaries and membership chairs are expected to attend; it is hoped a board member & 1st VP will also attend, and any interested Lions is welcome at this very special meeting. Reservations must be made through your Zone Chairman. This meeting will be the kick-off for “The Plan – Growing, Healthy Clubs for 5M-5” an exciting and unique blueprint to motivate our members and stimulate the growth of productive, healthy clubs in 5M-5.

DIABETES EXPO IN OCTOBER by Roger Badenhop Diabetes EXPO is scheduled for the Twin Cities on October 16, 2004 at the Minneapolis Convention Center. The American Diabetes Association has asked if the Lions would participate in this EXPO. The Diabetes Expo is entertaining, educational and informative. We expect to see 3,000 attendees including diabetes patients, their families and health care professionals. There are a number of volunteer opportunities. (Ticket Seller, Ticket Takers, Program Distributors, Bookstore Clerk and Vision Screening to list a few.) You need no special training, only the desire to make a difference. We could use 40 to 45 volunteers. Opportunities to volunteers: Friday afternoon ( 1:30 to 5:30) Set Up Saturday 1st Shift ( 9:15 to 1:00) Saturday 2nd Shift (12:30 t0 4:15) Saturday All Day ( 9:15 to 4:15) Saturday Move Out ( 4:00 to Complete)

* * * BECOME A 5M-5 BELL RINGER FOR THE SALVATION ARMY by Steve Gillane Each holiday, Salvation Army red kettles hit the streets to raise money to feed the hungry, nurture at risk kids, shelter the homeless, and empower the poor and discouraged. But the kettles are nothing without the friendly faces of volunteer bell ringers. District 5M5 has adopted bell ringing as a key holiday project. Bell ringing is a great opportunity for our clubs to enjoy meeting people in the community and to participate in a unified, district-wide project Each year, bell ringing in the metro area raises approximately $2 million in dollars, quarters, and dimes. This funding is especially critical in a year of budget cuts and limited resources. “People in Lions Clubs are leaders and givers, and I am proud to be associated with them” said Salvation Army Major Doug Yeck. “Bell ringing is a great match — it combines the Lions’ interest in being dynamic to immediate needs of the community with the Salvation Army’s knowledge of the community’s needs and their good stewardship.” I am hoping that three-quarters of the Lions, Lioness, and Leos clubs of our district will participate. Clubs who participate and those who contribute an outstanding number of volunteer hours will be recognized at the 2005 Mid-Winter convention. To sign up for bell ringing individually or with your club, call The Salvation Army at 651-746-3425 and ask for Tom Mckee and be sure to tell him you are with 5M5 Lions. If you would like to have more information, call or visit www.thesalarmy.com. Sincerely, Lion Steve Gillane 5M5 Bell Ringing Chairman, 763-537-0555.

NOMINATIONS SOUGHT FOR JOHN LUTTER MEMORIAL AWARD
The 5M-5 Past District Governors are once again seeking nominations to honor an outstanding Lion member for extraordinary service and dedication to Lionism. The Lutter Memorial Award is named for the late Past International Director John Lutter. Those of you who knew John remember his enthusiasm, his love of God and country, his dedication to the ideals of Lionism and his willingness to respond to the needs of his Lions Club. Nominations for this award should be a Lion member who exemplifies those beliefs. Not surprisingly, candidates will be those who live the Lions motto – “We Serve.” The 5M-5 PDG Fellowship has determined that 5M-5 Past District Governors will not be eligible for this award. Nomination forms may be picked up at the All-Zone Meeting September 30 at Camp Edenwood, or from your Zone Chairman. If you nominated someone last year and your candidate was not chosen, please remember that nominations are not carried over, and you are encouraged to re-submit your nomination. Please submit nominations by December 1, 2004 to PDG Bob Lieb, 460 Fifth Ave. No., #302, Hopkins, MN 55343 or email it to www.informer@dfti.net.

GOVERNOR OLE’S GOALS FOR 2004-2005
I wouldn’t be a good District Governor if I didn’t have any goals. These goals aren’t un-attainable and they are for all of us to make “OUR YEAR” a successful and enjoyable one.
1. Have Fun. Lions are known to be hard working, but let’s have fun doing it. 2. I would like to visit each club at least once. Doesn’t have to be a social/dinner meeting. I would enjoy coming to a board meeting. 3. Have Fun. 4. Get all Lions information to the clubs quickly. This means that anything that is brought up at a Cabinet meeting should be given to the Zone chairs, then to the clubs right after the Zone Meeting. 5. Have Fun. 6. I would like to see ALL clubs represented at the Zone Meetings. If we are going to succeed with #4, then we need to do #5. These Zone Meetings are going to have a new and different look about them…Come and see for yourself ! 7. Have Fun. 8. Lions, the theme for this year is “With Service Comes Membership”. We all know that we have wonderful service project, but do we ask any of the people that we serve if they would like to be a member? Myself, Vice District Governor Jack Hines, Region Chair Bob Jechorek and Wayne Harkness from the Merl Team have committed to growing our District by 5% per year for the next three years (The Plan) 9. Have Fun. 10. Last but not least - ENJOY BEING A LION.

GET READY FOR A FAB”BOO”LOUS SIGHT NIGHT 2004! This Halloween, on Sight Night, thousands of “creatures” in the form of boys and girls volunteer to collect used glasses while they trick-or-treat. Since 1999, more than 600,000 pairs of glasses have been collected on Sight Night. This year, our goal is to collect 225,000 pairs of glasses – enough for 7 international missions. You can download free Sight Night collection kits on-line by going to www.sightnight.org or calling toll-free 1-8777-605-4242 (one kit per group, please). Gather a group of friends, family, Boy Scout or Girl Scout Troop or Leo Club to participate. Order your free kit and have a howling good time collecting used eyeglasses while trick or treating on Sight Night. Then report how many glasses were collected by using the fax-back sheet included in the kit. After Sight Night, your group will receive a Sight Night Certificate. Drop off the glasses you collect at any LensCrafters location. LensCrafters will recycle the glasses and give them to people in developing countries. To learn more about the Sight Night visit www.givethegiftofsight.org or any LensCrafters store. For even more information contact Lion Ellie Reitmeyer at 952-540-0425.
