The 5M-5
Informer
November / December 2003 Volume 1, Issue 4
The Lions of 5M-5 are asking and getting new members. It is great to visit the clubs and see that several clubs are increasing their membership. Just ask, is really the secret. What we need to remember is how and why we each became a member and ask that same kind of person to come along with you for a visit. New members are like food, they give nourishment to a club. They come in with new ideas and put these ideas to work. Happy Thanksgiving! In the world of Lionism I see many things to be thankful for. Thank you is what we owe the businessmen in Chicago for accepting the challenge of Helen Keller when she asked the Lions to become Knights of the Blind. Thankful for the formation of clubs. Thankful for those who do research to enable people to see and to hear. Thankful for the Lions for being INNOVATIVE to make this all possible. A great example of Lions at work was at the Pilot City Center when LensCrafters, doctors and Lions helped screen school children and gave them glasses that their parents could not afford. To see them come out with big grins on their faces after receiving their glasses. Parents coming up and saying Thank you! Thank you! One Lion volunteer was so pleased to actually see and experience what we Lions do – as this is why we become a Lion – To Serve. Happy Holidays to all our wonderful and dedicated Lions, Lioness and Leos. Though there are many cards sent, shopping to do, parties and programs, remember those that do not have what we have. Lions are great to share, to distribute toys, food and of themselves. That is why we are Lions. This is my holiday wish for you….“May you discover enough goodness in others to believe in a world of peace. May you find serenity and tranquility in a world you may not always understand. May a kind
word, a reassuring touch, a warm smile be yours ever day of your life. May you give these gifts as well as receive them.” May all of you be blessed this holiday season as well as next year. Yours in Lionism, Lion Jackie Morlock, District Governor

THE BEST KEPT SECRET
The good works of our Lions Clubs has sometimes been referred to as the best kept secret. Unfortunately, this may be true in some respects, but it shouldn’t be a secret within our clubs – our 5M-5 District – or our 5M Multiple. As club members we are all aware of who are truly the heart and soul of our club – the rock - the ones who always are encouraging and optimistic about club events and new members. The one who is always dependable, someone you can count on to be there to offer advice, volunteer to help, give a pep talk, or do whatever it takes to move ahead and get the job done. Clubs now have two wonderful opportunities to honor those exceptional club members by nominating them for the 5M-5 John Lutter Award, or by naming them to the newly formed MD5M Hall of Fame. The following article details the new MD5M Hall of Fame Award. Please read it carefully, and urge your club to nominate a fellow member or members for either or both of these prestigious awards.
MD5M GOVERNOR’SCOUNCIL CREATES HALL OF FAME AWARD At their October meeting, the MD5M Council of Governors approved the creation of the MD5M Hall of Fame to honor outstanding Lion and Lioness members. The purpose of the Hall of Fame Award is to honor and recognize outstanding Lion or Lioness members for their legacy of service to mankind and the Association. A candidate should have qualifications above and beyond the call of duty including social and human endeavors, and he/she should be of good moral character and have a good reputation in his/her community. A nominee must be a member in good standing of a Lions or Lioness Club, or must have been a member in good standing of a Lions or Lioness Club at the time of their death. The Districts in MD5M will each have an opportunity to name one recipient of the MD5M Hall of Fame Award every year (two recipients each during the first three years of the award). Individuals, Clubs, Zones and Districts may all sponsor or nominate one of their Lion or Lioness members for this prestigious award. The recipient will be decided by the District by vote during their business session at their Mid-Winter Convention. The winning recipients will be inducted into the MD5M Hall of Fame at the Saturday noon luncheon during the MD5M Multiple Convention. The first inductees will be honored at the MD5M Multiple Convention to be held in Mahnomen, MN May 2004. In order to nominate a Lion or Lioness for the MD5M Hall of Fame Award, an application must be submitted on the official application form, to the District Governor at least 30 days prior to the District’s Mid-Winter Convention (making Decem-ber 16 the deadline). In addition, a check for $150.00 must be submitted with the application. The cost of the award is $150.00 and only those applicants that are successful will be charged. All other applicants will have their original check returned to them following the induction of the new recipients. This is a great opportunity to honor a Lion or Lioness member in your club or in District 5M-5 for their outstanding service to our Association. If you are interested in nominating someone, application forms are available from the District Governor and all Zone Chairmen. Let’s take advantage of this opportunity and honor one of our fellow Lion or Lioness members at this year’s Multiple District Convention.
WE REMEMBER Lioness Margaret Berntsen, a charter member of the Eden Prairie Lioness Club who died October 29, 2003.
Lion Clemens Peterson, long time member of the Minneapolis Central (Downtown) Lions Club.
BLOOMINGTON LEO CLUB SHOWS HOW IT’S DONE Last month we asked 5M-5 Leo Clubs to share with us what activities they are involved in. Wow! Did we hear from Lion Curtis Hampton about the Bloomington Lion’s Leo Club! The Bloomington Lions sponsored the Leo Club at Kennedy High School where they have been active in service projects involving fellow students as well as the Bloomington community and others. The initial goals of the Leos were to 1) help students work and achieve results as a team, b) help students be more safe, secure, and successful and c) help students be engaged in activities that are fun, challenging, and provide an opportunity to serve people in addition to their usual classroom duties. During the 2002-2003 school year approxi-mately thirty students volunteered with the group in at least one activity. The Leos meet periodically to discuss ideas and projects to volunteer their time. According to Leo Advisor Curtis Hampton Some of the projects the club was involved in include: Worked at Bridging, Inc. cleaning, moving furniture, folding clothes and working with customers; Served at the Blmgtn. Lions Spaghetti Dinner and Pancake Breakfast; Adopted a family at Thanksgiving, shopped for necessities and made a family very thankful; Volunteered at Loaves & Fishes; Promoted and hosted Santa Shop Box in conjunction with Corner-stone whereby children living in shelters could select Christmas gifts for their families free of charge; Sorted and boxed items for Operation Christmas Child, a nationwide program whereby shoe boxes filled with gifts and toiletries are shipped to poverty-stricken countries; Provided child care at Indian Mounds Elementary PTA meeting and assisted at their school carnival; Performed after-school cleanup by emptying trash, sweeping hallways, etc. as a show of support on Custodian Appreciation Day at KHS for which they made banners and gift bags for each custodian; Cleaned a stretch of 9 Mile Creek with help from Lion Terry Selle. Outstanding!! Students busy working, serving, shopping, volunteering, promoting, sorting, providing, performing and cleaning - - in service to others. What a great example they set for their fellow students at Kennedy High School. Congratulations, Bloomington Leos! The Lions of 5M-5 are proud of you. Keep up the good work! * * * “We may give without loving, but we cannot love without giving.” - Unknown LIONS WORLD SERVICE DAY Thanks to the generosity of our friends and neighbors throughout the metropolitan area, and the unselfish dedication and muscle of the volunteer Lions, Lioness and Leos of 5M-5, local food shelves were filled following another successful Lions World Service Food Drive. Lion Pete Hayes of the Rogers Lions Club reports the following details of food and money gathered. Club Pounds Dollars Hopkins Evening Lions 238 $ 258.00 Edina Lions 1,420 80.00 Maple Grove Dande Lions 200.00 Plymouth Lions 1,200 110.00 South Tonka Lions 105 89.00 Brooklyn Center Lions 1,143 25.00 Eden Prairie Lioness/Lions 5,528 487.00 Bloomington Lions 537 525.87 Rogers Lions 13,000 377.00 St. Bonifacious Lions 1,400 Lyn Lake Lions/Lioness 1,121 134.50 Chanhassen Lions 1,437 300.00 Minneapolis Hiawatha (donated $100 to LCIF)
These are all the totals I received at the time this news-letter was sent out. I apologize to those clubs who may not have been recognized. Although the World Service Day food drive contributed greatly to stocking the community food shelves in our communities, remember that it was only a temporary assist. We know the clubs in 5M-5 will continue to contribute generously to local services who maintain food shelves for those who depend on them. Thanks to all of you for a job well done! * * * A THANK YOU FROM THE NEW MPLS. NORTH LIONS CLUB It was a great turn-out at the Charter Night for the brand new Minneapolis North Lions Club on October 10th. To show their support of the new club (or maybe it was evidence of how hungry some tables were) generous dollar amounts were bid for the privilege of being the first tables served. New North Minneapolis Club President Gary Cunningham graciously sent the following note: “The Minneapolis North Lions would like to thank all the Lions and Lion Clubs that sent gifts or attended our charter night, for supporting our club. Also, we would like to thank the New Hope Lions Club for being our sponsoring club. A special thanks to PDGs Bucky Hartkopf and Charley Williamson for all the time, encouragement and enthusiasm in making our club a reality. We had our first service project already with the help of the Camden Lions and LensCrafters, and we screened 198 children for glasses with 195 receiving new glasses at no cost to them. Thanks to everyone for your support.” You’re off to a good start, Minneapolis North! The Lions of 5M-5 welcome you into our fellowship of service to others.
CAMP COURAGE HALLOWEEN UPDATE Chairman Jack Hines would like to thank everyone who helped at the Halloween Party at Camp Courage on October 26. We served 190 kids & about 100 families and these families are very grateful for all the support. Jack also would like to thank the Clubs that donated food, prizes, cash and helped at the party. If your Club has not donated it is still not too late. Please send checks to Dave Apold, District Treasurer, 6480 Pineview Lane North, Maple Grove, MN 55369-6034. Whatever money is left over will be used for a special Camp Courage project. * * * OLE’S LUTIFISK CORNER This year has started off with a bang. I have had many club visits talking about Membership and Leadership. Lion Karen and myself were at VDG training in Mahnomen in October. We met with the other VDG’s and partners in service. Good training session and good fellowship. We all came with the idea that we knew what to expect during our next year and left knowing that we really didn’t know that much. What we did all know was what a great organization Lions is and now we can get on to the business of being leaders. Now, on the lighter side…..Do you know what season this is? To a true Norsk…It’s Lutifisk time !!!!! Can’t you just smell the aroma of the lefsa, herring and that wonderful LUTIFISK drenched in real butter and white sauce…Can’t you just feel those arteries hardening? For some, one meal is plenty. But for the true Norsk, you have to have it…at least three maybe four or more times during the season. Thinking of next years Govenor’s banquet….LUTIFISK, ya think?????? Yours In Lionism, VDG Ole THIS ‘N THAT Please note these important changes to the Mid-Winter schedule - : * The Dram Shop Seminar will be held on Friday, January 16th at 2:30 p.m. instead of Saturday morning, as reported in the Mid-Winter Special Edition. It was being worn by a daughter from another club but he doesn’t know which club that was. If there is any way the hat found its way into your home would you please call Bob at 612-702-4843. He’d greatly appreciate it.

* * * CHAN LIONS HOST SIGHT NIGHT EVENT The Chanhassen Lions hosted a Sight Night event on October 25th. Lion members had a table set up at the city Community Recreation Center for city-wide trick or treaters who attend the Chanhassen Halloween event. Lions enlist area children to post door hangers advising area residents that Lions will be back in a week to collect used eye glasses for needy kids and adults in other countries. On Saturday, November the Lions collect the glasses and give prizes and treats to those children participating in Sight Night. At the time of the collection of eyeglasses the Lions hand out a post card for adults to complete if they know of any area resident needing assistance with sight or hearing problems. Last year, this outreach identified two area residents that needed assistance with hearing aids and glasses for macular degeneration problems. The Chaska Lions assisted the Chan Lions in aiding these individuals. Congratulations to the members of the Chanhassen Lions Club on their successful Sight Night!
LEHP - LIONS EYE HEALTH PROGRAM What is LEHP? It is a program funded by Sight First with a grant from LCIF. SightFirst is a worldwide program to eradicate preventable blindness. LEHP stands for Lions Eye Health Program, and it is a fight against two of the leading causes of blindness in developed countries, Diabetic eye disease and Glau-coma. November is National Diabetic Eye Disease Awareness Month. As we age we should get regular comprehensive eye exams. If you have any warning signs you should get an exam earlier than a person normally would. A dilated pupil eye exam once a year is recommended for people with diabetes. At risk is anyone with diabetes or a family history of diabetes, they should get their eyes examined to make sure they do not have any eye disease. January is National Glaucoma Awareness month. Glaucoma is the other leading cause of blindness. Glaucoma is an increase in the fluid pressure inside the eye. Left unchecked it can cause vision loss and even blindness. Glaucoma may progress a long way without showing any symptoms, so it is very important to get a thorough exam including the ‘air puff’ test and also a dilated pupil eye exam every two years. People with diabetes or a family history of diabetes, people over the age of 60 and African-Americans over the age of 40 are at extra risk of getting glaucoma. So please, please make an appointment to get your eyes examined, these eye diseases can occur in anyone at any age. Lion Lorraine Shinnick 5M5 LEHP Chairperson

LENSCRAFTERS HOME TOWN DAYS WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 3 Roger Badenhop, Hearing Foundation Co-Chair Each year on the first Wednesday of December, the LensCrafters stores have an event called Home Town Days. It’s a great way to provide glasses for the people in your community who require assistance at no cost to your club. To participate, contact your local LensCrafters store to determine the best procedure for working with their particular store for this project. Then contact the schools in your area, the shelters and any group that could use assistance with obtaining glasses and set up appointments. The examinations and the glasses will be provided – compliments of LensCrafters. Questions? Call Roger at 612-721-1625.

Jim Ramstad and (Lion) Rep. Mark Kennedy. Lions of Minnesota offer schools a LIBERTY DAY program in which students are introduced to the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitu-tion. It is designed to educate Minnesota youth regard-ing our country’s Pursuit of Liberty, -providing them a basic understanding of our Heritage and what it means to be an American. These documents form the foundation for our American way of life, and learning more about them is particularly appropriate at this time. The program celebrates the birthday of James Madison considered the father of the Constitution, on March 16th, but can be celebrated any day of the year. Lions recruit current and previously elected public officials to speak to grades 4 through 12 on the importance of these documents. Very successful programs were held last year in Chanhassen and Eden Prairie. Teachers are provided with booklets con-taining the Declaration and Constitution that may be distributed to students at the end of the session. An additional program for youth aged 11-14 is being sponsored by Lions Int’l. where they go to their Post Office on December 13th and quiz adults waiting in line about the Constitution. Post Masters have given their approval and this can be a means of gaining club publicity as well as helping all learn more about what it means to be an American. Contact PDG Jack McKernan at 952-922-8267 or jbmckernan@aol.com for more detailed information on this outstanding program.
