April 2004 Volume 1, Issue 9

Dear Lions, Lioness & Leos,

April is here and that means spring is in the air.  It is also the time to make sure that the club officer elections are in swing and that the PU101’s are ready to turn in.  I will need them by the first of May.  Please cooperate and finalize this.

ROAR College is the new officers training class and is designed for the newly elected officers of each club, be they newcomers or repeats.  We encourage the Presidents, Secretaries, Treasurers, Membership chairs and Tail Twisters to attend.  Even though they may have been to one before it is a great refresher course.  No one can know it all.  Believe me there is always something new.

We will also have a New Member Induction Ceremony for all new members at ROAR College.  We encourage and welcome all Lions and Lioness that became members during this Lion year. (July 2003 to now).  We will have Orientation for the new members as well as Lion members that have been inducted during the year.  Anyone that would like an update or would like to know about Lionism is welcome to attend.

District Governor-Elect Ole Nelson has been working on his new Cabinet for the year 2003-2004.  As is suggested there will be changes in positions as well as new members and I encourage all Lion members to welcome the new Cabinet as they take office in July.

Int’l. President T.S. LEE’s new program about Women in Lionism has surpassed his goal of 16,000 and as of December 31, 2003 has recruited over 17,000.  5M5 has shown an increase.  Keep up the good work.

Lion Timon Bonda formerly of Kenya, Africa and a member of the Golden Valley Lions Club is seeking assistance.   He has been very active in help furnish a school for the poor people of Kenya.  Over the years he has used his own money and enlisted help from his Lions club.  However they are a small club with limited

resources.  Lion Timon is hoping that some clubs would be in position to assist in funding one of their needs.  One option he is working on is to help provide registered students with their uniforms, books and lunches.  It would cost about $200 per student for the year and there are 50 students.  However if any club or clubs could help he would like to talk to them.  If you’re interested & want more information call Lion Timon at 763-545-2828.

I encourage the clubs to sign up their delegates for the Multiple Convention.  Also sign up delegates for the International Convention. Let’s show our support for candidate PCC Maynard Rucks of 5MD for International Director.  There will be the Multiple 5M Snowman pins at the Zone meetings, which are great for trading.

Please ask someone you respect to become a Lion.  Give them an opportunity to be part of this great organization of Lionism.  We need them.  As Helen Keller says, “alone we can do so little, together we can do so much”. Yours in Lionism,

Lion Jackie Morlock, District Governor

ROAR COLLEGE

The education and training session for new Lions and new Lion 2004-2005 officers known as ROAR COLLEGE will take place Sunday evening, May 2nd from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the Brooklyn Center Civic Center, 6301 Shingle Creek Parkway (I-694 East to Shingle Creek Exit).

ROAR COLLEGE is for anyone taking seriously their new responsibilities as a club officer or new member.  It will also be an informative, encourage-ing, and motivational experience for all attendees.  All Lions ~ new and veteran ~ are welcome but keep in mind that a light supper will be served for $7.50/person so an RSVP is a must.  Clubs are encouraged to pay for all members attending.

Come join the dinner, education, fun, prizes and more. A letter will be going to the club secretaries soon.

This 'n That

DON’T FORGET!  It’s very important these new officers be voted on and reported to Lions International by the club secretary on the PU-101 form by May 1, 2004. Get reports to the D.Gov, D.Gov-elect, Region Chair & Zone Chairs.                     *   *   *

CLUB PRESIDENTSClubs that had/have a member pass away between June 2003 and May 2004 - send in the name, club, district & a crisp, clear picture to Lion Jim Johansen, 8103 – 210th Street North, Hawley, MN 56549, or email to him at jkjohansen@juno.com.  A Power Point presentation is being prepared for the Friday evening Memorial Service at the MD5M Convention.  An electronic picture is acceptable as long as the resolution is greater than 150

FYI:  From information reported on Activities Reports to Lions International from 5M-5, clubs in our district collected 28,592 eyeglasses, 165 hearing aids, donated $367,437 with an average per club of $21,613, and donated 12,170 hours to various causes.  Think of what these numbers would be if all the clubs reported!.

GOOD TIME MANAGEMENT

WILL BE REQUIRED!

You’ll have to practice excellent time (and tummy) management on Sunday, April 4th, if you hope to attend church services and all the scheduled pancake breakfasts on Palm Sunday.

To take them all in will require traveling the far reaches of our 5M-5 district, from Eden Prairie to Crystal, Mound to Bloomington with St. Louis Park in between.

They’re not just for pancakes anymore, as you can enjoy scrambled eggs at Crystal, Belgium Waffles at N.W. Tonka (in Mound), get tested for diabetes at St. Louis Park, purchase spring plant gift certificates from the Lioness at Eden Prairie, and put up with the general mischief of club members at Bloomington.  Check out

their individual ads elsewhere in this issue - including a couple that are scheduled for later in April!

An Alka-Seltzer toast to those of you who manage to attend them all!

SUPPORT OUR CANDIDATE FOR INTERNATIONAL DIRECTOR

District MD5M has an opportunity to elect PCC Maynard Rucks as International Director at the Lions Convention in Detroit/Windsor in July of 2004.

Every Lion in MD5M is important to the campaign as we prepare for the 5M Multiple Convention in Mahnomen.  You have seen the yellow “Rucks Team” ribbons on many Lions.  If you are going to Multiple Convention and/or International Convention we would like each and every Lion to wear a ribbon.  Ribbons will be available from the Rucks Team members.

We have had many more expenses this second year than if it was a one year campaign.  We have mailed brochures, business cards and letters to Lions throughout the world to promote PCC Maynard  for International Director.  If you or your club would like to donate to the campaign, please send a check to:

Rucks Campaign Committee, Attn. Lion Mike Vos, 20472 – 371st Avenue, Green Isle, MN  55338.

Show PCC Maynard that 5M-5 supports his can-didacy for  International Director.

WELCOME NEW MEMBERS!

It is great to welcome these new members that have joined our organization.  Do your best to make them feel welcome! – Governor Jackie

UPDATE ON EYE TRANSPORTERS

PDG Ken Steies of the MN Lions Eye Bank reports the MN Highway Patrol will continue to transport donated eyes to the U of M until May 31, 2004.  Beginning June 1st , the Patrol will transport donated eyes from outstate to approximately six locations around the metro area.  These locations would be within 50 miles of the University.  That means we will still need transporters for the last relay.  More information will be available after the next board meeting of the Lions Eye Bank.
